Response to the film "In the Morning", as seen in the Media that Matters film festival
I'm really haunted by the Media That Matters movie "In the Morning". For those that saw the movie and were wondering (and this is information I found on the above-linked page), the actors were people speaking phoenetic Turkish. Turkish actors were difficult to cast, because there seems to be a code of silence on the topic of Honor Killings.
As a woman and a human being, I find the notion of Honor Killings incredibly disturbing.
This raises a pervasive and sticky issue: how do we straddle the line between respecting the codes of a culture while fighting for human rights for everyone? What rights or duties do we have to try to influence another culture to change. This relates further into conversations about gentrification vs. revitilization, as well as the long-running theme of priveleged white folks wanting to affect change in non-white or non-priveleged areas. I don't know if this topic or discussion is within the perview of the CIC or it's student group, or if it's appropriate, but I just wanted to throw this out there. Discuss. -Alexis
