IDRC Telecentre.org internships (Canadians and developing country nationals only)
Hi all -
Please find below information re: 4-12 month paid internships with Telecentre.org at the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa, Canada. Under the terms of IDRC's charter and funding priorities, these are open to NATIONALS OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES (OR CANADIANS) ONLY (dual citizens would also be eligible). Note also that the posted start date of January 2007 is negotiable, and interested SI candidates could almost certainly negotiate a May start date to coincide with the Michigan summer break.
I've been specifically asked to recommend 1-2 SI students for this, so if you're interested, please contact me ASAP.
Best -
Steve

Dear Dr. Jackson & Dr. Gordon,
My name is Silvia Caicedo and I work with Mark Surman (telecentre.org) who was visiting your institution almost two weeks ago.
I am writing to you at this time to ask your help with names and contacts of students who might be interested in holding an internship at the IDRC, working with telecentre.org. We are seeking your help as we have not been able to find someone that fit our requirements through the normal competition.
See the link for more details;
http://www.idrc.ca/en/ev-84370-201-1-DO_TOPIC.html
I understand from Mark's visit that many of your students may possess the qualities we are looking for and might be interested in the work we do.
I am adding some preliminary information regarding the conditions for internship tenure that might be important to have at hand, see below.
We would be indebted to you if you could recommend one of your students. Please contact me if you have any questions or need more information. Looking forward to your reply.
Cheers,
Silvia

IDRC Internship Award
The IDRC Internship awards provide exposure to research for
international development through a program of training in research management and grant administration under the guidance of IDRC program staff. The internship is designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in research program management - in the creation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective.
The intern will undertake a program of research on the topic submitted when competing for the Internship during a part (often around 50% ) of their time and will be trained in the techniques of research management through hands-on work experience with their chosen program's programming and practices. They will work under the mentorship of a Program Officer(s).
Program:
Internships will be considered for a program of training and research responding to IDRC's research priorities. IDRC's research activities focus on four Program Areas:
* Social and Economic Policy
* Environmental and Natural Resource Management
* Information and Communication Technologies for Development
* Innovation, Policy and Science
Duration
Internships are tenable for a minimum of 4 months and a maximum of 12 months at IDRC headquarters in Ottawa or in a Regional Office. Developing-country nationals residing in their home country (or another country) must hold their internships in the appropriate Regional Office.
Employment Status
Interns doing their internship in Canada will receive a salary in a range from CA$33,201 to CA$38,434 per year*, depending on qualifications and experience. They will be considered as full-time term employees of the Centre. Benefits include contributions to Employment Insurance, Employer Health Tax and the Canada Pension Plan and 4% in lieu of vacation leave. Some travel and research expenses
will also be supported, up to a maximum of CA$10,000. The salary range and benefits for interns located in the Regional Offices will vary according to regional conditions. No allowance for relocation is provided.
* Salary scale is currently under review
Eligibility
The program is aimed at candidates who, through demonstrated
achievements in academic studies, work or research, have shown interest in the creation and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective. Candidates can be Canadians, permanent residents, or citizens of developing countries, who are either currently registered in a Master's Program or have completed a Master's Degree. Candidates
need not be affiliated with an institution. They may participate in internships as part of an academic requirement.
Commencement of awards: January 2008.
