Revised DFE Proposal: Computer instruction and program evaluation at a public library

Technically, I have not changed the text of the proposal, but based on the comments I received, I will add some information about where this kind of internship could happen. The main library I had in mind was the Ypsilanti District Library because I interned there this past summer and I know their computer training classes are in high demand. They offer courses in using the Internet and MS Office products, and very basic courses such as how to use a mouse. I’m not completely sure if they could accommodate a project like this, but the person to contact would be Paula Drummond, Head of Adult Services (drummond@ypsilibrary.org) if anyone is interested in inquiring about the possibilities of such an internship at the Ypsilanti District Library. They have one person who teaches the classes who could serve as the mentor for teaching, but I don’t know how much expertise she has in carrying out an evaluation of the classes.

DFE Proposal: Computer instruction and program evaluation at a public library

Description of the job: The student will focus on developing professional skills in instruction and program evaluation. (S)he will primarily be involved with the provision of adult computer training classes at the library. After a period of observing and assisting in classes, the student will begin teaching. (S)he may also have the opportunity to develop and teach a new class based on community needs. The student will also conduct an evaluation of the classes to assess their impact, resulting in a report of findings and recommendations.

DFE Proposal with Ypsilanti District Library

Following are the ideas that came up when I presented my internship idea during class, in addition to some ideas that I came up with later. The main idea that I’m thinking about going with is providing technology training to library users. When I interned at the Ypsilanti District Library this past summer, I noticed that their computer training classes were hugely popular and I think there is a need for greater support in that area.
