CIC Seminar Notes 20060908

First seminar. Paul will give short theory/reading segments, and Ed will focus on the practical side.

Objectives:

Understand what the opportunites are for careers in public interest work. (Jobs at nonprofits, commerical orgs serving nonprofit community, jobs in int'l gov orgs, public service work, social enterprise companies (forprofit with clear social mission).) Explore whether you have a way of seeing this as a fulltime career path that will pay mortgage, or whether it's something you do in your extra time. (In general this sort of work does not pay as well.)

DRM Activists Call On U2's Bono

Global technology activist network DefectiveByDesign.org has begun collecting signatures for a petition to Bono, the U2 frontman and change-worker. It's an interesting way of framing the "Digital Restrictions Management" (DRM) debate. DRM lets the record industry act as a gatekeeper between a musician's fans and a musician's music. Internship/DFE request

I am looking for an internship or DFE in the Boston area, and I thought I would cast out a request to the CIC alumni community. I've been studying information economics and policy, and I'm curious about community informatics/technology and how information policy choices can support community development both in the States and abroad.
