Grid Computing - a historical perspective

This was on a list that I subscribe to -- interesting thought:

in response to a thread that talks about the trend of applications being server based...

-----

This is a commonplace observation that, stripped of context, sounds a lot more profound than it does in the light of computing history. While it is basically true that early computing was centralized, with extremely thin clients; then the users revolted with the advent of personal computers; and now we're all flocking back to server models, two significant things have changed:

1. The servers are all connected to eachother, making a huge, global information store, rather than a limited island of information available.

2. Personalization is here. We are not all logging on to a generic interface - we're logging on to portals that know who we are and show us (mostly) what we want to see.

So, rather than reverting to the mainframe model, we are now experiencing personalized, shared computing on a multi-dimensioned array of servers. it's a huge evolution that offers the benefits of shared platforms without sacrificing the individual preferences that PC's enabled.

You have to put it in perspective. BTW, Cliff, I'm an old-timer like you - I learned BASIC on one of those dumb terminals in the early 80's. :-)

Freedom from Hunger Knowledge Assessment

I posted prior but it somehow didn't save -- now formating is lost :( I am struggling through performing an assessment of organizational knowledge for my organization. This document will be the basis for both our knowledge management and IT strategies. I’ve just finished a basic outline. Since you all have the luxury of being surrounded with theory and professors and each other to think about information issues, maybe you will have insight that I am missing. Below is a high level outline that I’ve put together – are there things missing? Does it follow a logical sequence?

DFE / Intern Opportunities at Freedom From Hunger

I am a CIC alum and currently work as the knowledge manager for a NGO in Davis, CA. We work in the fields of education and microfinance. I have several projects that SI students may be interested. These could be DFEs or summer internships. I may at some point be able to spin some of them into actual positions at some point. Here are some examples that I came up with off the top of my head. 1. Technical website usability, architecture and re-design: We have a 3 layer portal that serves as a digital library, an internal document repository and a collaboration space for teams. It was implemented very hastily with not a lot of consideration about the usability. I need help figuring out what needs to be done with it.
