CIC Project - ScienceQuest/Another Ann Arbor

ScienceQuest - Another Ann Arbor (http://www.anotherannarbor.org/)

Help kids and have fun, and with us! (Just a 3-4 hour a week commitment too!)

Another Ann Arbor (a 501c3 nonprofit) and the School of Social Work (and SI!!!) are looking for responsible students interested in a fun and easy way to help kids. A3 is starting a local ScienceQuest program- an innovative, nationally recognized, after school program for 10-14 year-old kids.

To summarize, volunteers (called Coaches) take the best parts of Science class (the experiments!) and help kids investigate their interests and do an experiment or project about it, using a self-directed learning model.

This program is designed to be easy for University students to participate, fun for everyone, and aimed at a critical age and time which provides the most impact on kids. There are lots of studies that have shown two common issues this program addresses:

1. Kids between 10 and 14 begin to lose enthusiasm in school- and in particular- Science. This program strives to rekindle the natural curiosity about the world that tends to wane around this age.
2. That kids who participate in after-school programs are less likely to engage in hi-risk behavior.

If you decide to become a ScienceQuest Coach, there is a plethora of support and aid available. You will get great printed, online, and live resources, be working with a trained ScienceQuest coach, and with teachers and staff from the Ann Arbor Public Schools. You’ll also have contact information to reach the people who developed ScienceQuest and have helped hundreds of others build a great project and have a great time.

The program works around UM class and spring break schedules, (done before finals!) and meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4. We don’t expect more that 1-2 hours per week outside of the classroom for planning and preparation.

We have to hurry though. Please call 929-9642 and ask for Matt Souden to participate, or email msouden@umich.edu

ScienceQuest begins January 18 and a Coach training meeting will be scheduled prior to this.
