Bridging Pipeline, Dialogue, and Urban Revitalization:
Toward a Comprehensive Community Development Agenda

An NCID (National Center for Institutional Diversity) Critical Issues Forum

What are some specific strategies for combining the
strengths of existing U-M diversity pipeline, dialogue, and
community development efforts? How might the bridging of
these three areas strengthen the University of
Michigan's fulfillment of its core mission as a research
    university?

Proposal 2 challenges the University of Michigan to devise
specific strategies for strengthening the pipeline that
brings diverse students into the classroom as a basis for
enhancing educational excellence, in ways that also
contribute to community development and involve faculty
members in advancing the core mission of the research
university. Outreach is one approach, but only if outreach
is conceived as a form of sustainable community development
    and high-quality scholarship.

This forum will bring together key campus and community
stakeholders who have commitment to this purpose and who
want to advance it for its educational benefits and as a
    model for higher education worldwide.

The forum will occur on Friday, January 25th, from 4-5:30p.m., in the Tribute Room of the School of Education (room #1322). We'll begin with remarks from three panelists and then move into full-group discussion:

Professor Barry Checkoway, School of Social Work (dialogue)

Professor June Thomas, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning (urban revitalization)

Professor Percy Bates, Director of Programs for Educational Opportunity, School of Education
    (pipeline)
