1. Group Structure

We discussed that the group has decided use a committee structure in its operation. The group has assigned various members with specific tasks relating to these informal committees. See November 30 meeting minutes.

There is easy access to the Student Group activity on the Community Information Corps site. Look at the upper right hand corner of the site for a link called "Student Group." Everyone is encouraged to sign up for a member account on the CIC website, which will allow users to post to the site.

2. Basic Semester Scheduling

We've decided to bind various things into the CIC Student Group schedule this semester. These include working on projects, bringing in guest speakers, reading relevant articles, collaborating with other iSchools, and planning lunches that will incorporate faculty.

We have tentatively planned a CIC Student Group meeting for the 3rd Thursday of each month. Meetings will most likely be held in the evenings at West Hall. Please note that all members (and non-members) are welcome to attend meetings and encouraged to bring ideas or topics to discuss.

We have planned CIC Student Group lunches to include faculty. We will plan these for the 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday of each month. Those who wish to participate should meet outside 311 WH at noon on these days. We plan to eat at nearby restaurants and aim to end by 1pm.

3. Projects

Ongoing
Real Media - Monday will be the normal volunteer day this semester. Interested students will leave from the School of Social Work for Detroit at 2:30pm and return to Ann Arbor by 6pm. Applications available here. There is also other opportunities to volunteer, including helping out at a Saturday silkscreening day or helping develop an interview skills workshop that will be held on February 5th. Watch for emails from Jen for more details.

Possible
Agrarian Adventure - Local non-profit that works on addressing food issues. This organization is run out of Tappan Middle School in Ann Arbor. Elissa Trumbull is the executive director and would like to come in to talk with CIC students to explain the organization and propose some areas for involvement.

Base of the Pyramid Protocol - There was an email concerning possibly student involvement with this initiative, there is already some involvement from the Business School.

Media that Matters Film Festival - Collection of short films highlighting various issues including economic justice, human rights, media and politics. The DVD has arrived, and we hope to provide a public screening of it (rights already cleared). There is also an opportunity to have discussion about the films after the screening. We will have a previewing of the DVD within the next few weeks, possibly at Piet's house.

FreeCulture.org - Grassroots student and community movement that promotes freedom of creativity, especially within a digital realm. There are chapters throughout the US as well as internationally.

4. Chicago trip

We now have a list of those interested in traveling to Chicago on January 26 - 28. We plan on taking the train at 6pm from Ann Arbor, and returning on Sunday afternoon. There are a few projects in the works, including meeting with University of Illinois students, attend the weekly seminar at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, and possibly working on a book organization and shelving project. We are actively looking into transportation, lodging, and projects. More to come. It seems everyone who wants to go should be able to go. We have other options for housing including staying at friends' houses in Chicago if there is not enough room for us all to stay at the hostels.

5. Readings

We are currently investigating a few short articles that group members are encouraged to read--we will then have a discussion on the reading. We will look at the CIC core concepts document to pull reading ideas. We envision these readings and discussion to happen 2-3 times per semester.

6. Exposure

CIC Student Group has stated our intent to be a part of the SI visiting days in March and will work to develop a write-up and short presentation.

expoSItion - Will be held on Monday, March 26 from 12:00-2:00 in the Michigan League Vandenberg Room. We will have CIC Student Group members present to highlight our projects and encourage new student support.

Adjourn.
