The Centre for Educational Technology (CET) in the
Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) is seeking to appoint an
experienced professional to play a key research and development role, to
ensure that the intentions of the educational technology policy of the
University of Cape Town (UCT) are realised through mobile learning
(m-learning) appropriate to the needs of UCT’s curricula, academics and
students.
The objective of this project is to investigate and develop
m-learning solutions based on technologies likely to be available to
students, such as mobile phones. In particular, we plan to extend existing
interfaces from web to wireless in order to 1) support course administration
and student support
through mobile devices; 2) support communication,
collaboration and knowledge sharing among students as part of their
curriculum work on specific courses; 3) develop other pedagogical
interventions.
Key responsibilities include:
*Explore and
investigate innovative ways of using mobile technologies to enhance teaching
and learning at UCT. *Design and develop user interface extensions of web
learning environments to mobile devices. *Develop, adapt or customise
wireless technology solutions that can easily be supported and maintained.
*Contribute to and collaborate in research into effective uses of educational
technologies broadly. *Design and conduct research in mobile learning using
both quantitative and qualitative, desk and field research.
*Disseminate
information to colleagues and a wider community regarding mobile learning
possibilities in a variety of forms (including online and face to face).
Key requirements include:
*A relevant postgraduate qualification,
preferably at Masters level.
*Excellent understanding of the possibilities of
wireless technologies to support the work of teaching staff and the needs of
