"Dear Friends:

So many of us are overwhelmed here in New Orleans by the basic research
tasks necessary to counter the racial injustices of the recovery. T o

The School of Information Recovery Project

After the devastation of New Orleans by hurricane Katrina, a few students here tossed around the idea of helping out where we could. A few days into our informal chats, Rebecca Carter, and I, Kyle Conner decided to act on our desire to help. We applied to the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning (http://www.umich.edu/%7Emserve) for project funding to send 4 graduate students from the School of Information (http://www.si.umich.edu) at the University of Michigan to New Orleans to help out.

HCI volunteers needed locally

HCI students are encouraged to volunteer for Menlo Innovation's Volunteer program. Students will be trained to act as High Tech Anthropologists to help develop software for local non-profit organizations. This is a great chance to get experience in HCI and to do some good in the community. Volunteers can commit whatever time they have available but typically come in three times a week for three hours. Many SI folks have been involved in this program and at least one is a current employee.

Volunteers will be compensated in Cheesy Poofs and organic free trade coffee. Menlo's training courses are also available for free to volunteers.
