Social Networks

Social networks is a theory based upon the premise that relationships are useful for understanding social structure and behavior. Research has shown that social networks, from families to nations, play a critical role in determining the way problems are solved, organizations are run, and the degree to which individuals succeed.

Technology for Social Capital

In class today we talked about ways technology can build or even leverage social capital. This is a topic to further that discussion, or just aggregate ideas. (Possibly with an eye toward implementing some of them.) I was intrigued by the "couch network" idea for the CIC Web. I wonder, though, how that would work. It's not a question of posting comments to a forum, but rather a state that you want to be in: "I'm a CIC Couch offerer. Contact me if you're coming through area A." Perhaps a clickable map with flags where CIC-ers dwell. However, if students or others are posting their NEED for couches on which to crash, then a forum makes sense.

Preparing for the Annual Gathering

I've been busy planning the Annual Gathering. Hopefully you will come!

The Viridian Design Movement

The Viridian Design Movement was started by Bruce Sterling. The goal was to build an art movement "with an expiration date," focused on climate change and destructive weather. Like any movement, the Viridians eschew neutrality for a tenacious focus on some key principles. However, they may be round where you expect them to be square, and spiky where you expect them to be soft. This is an environmental movement with three noticeable differences: no patience with fuzzy mysticism, a focus on the old (not the hip youngsters), and a willingness to play ball with law enforcement and armed services. Design principles available here and the introductory address available here.

Discussion Question 8 Putnam

In the taxonomy of concepts for this CIC website the concept of Social Capital has under it Bridging/Bonding. Civic Engagement, and Social Networks. What is the relationship between all of these concepts/sub-concepts?
