How do I get involved with CIC?

There are numerous ways of getting involved with CIC.

1. The CIC seminar: this is a seminar class offered every semester. The students in the class are expected to do certain readings every week and come to class prepared to discuss those readings. Guest speakers from different areas related to CIC are invited to come speak in the seminar as well. You do not have to be registered in the class to attend any of the sessions or guest lectures. Here are some pictures from previous classes:

We have had exploratory discussions with Ann Bishop (from the University of Illinois) about having a group of students from UM provide editorial support for the online publication of the Journal of Community Informatics. Here is how Ann envisioned our potential role:

"What Mike (Gurstein) and I had discussed was finding a dedicated group of students with a strong interest in CI to take on the electronic production on an ongoing basis. The students and their institution would be prominently listed on the journal's website. There would be JoCI staffer somewhere in the world who would supervise and help lead your work, as needed.

Kate Williams, SI post-doc and recent PhD, along with several masters students will be speaking about their work building and using one of the first datasets for the field of community informatics. They are looking at the records of the federal Technology Opportunities PRogram, which provided $250 million to 606 communities over 11 years for experiments in community uses of technology.

The conceptual framework for this research comes from her dissertation. The presenters hope everyone will read chapter 2 and scan the rest of it.
